Cell phone technology is advancing at a dizzying pace, and what seem like scientifically-sound solutions may actually be compounding the problem. By understanding the principles of cell phone radiation claims, consumers can evaluate the best protective products on the market.

Cell phone radiation protection

Three approaches

Common Sense
The FCC and Federal Trade Commission recommend using a few common-sense approaches to reducing exposure to cell phone SAR. These include using a headset to keep your phone away from your body, texting more often than speaking, and waiting for a good signal, thus reducing “heavy” exposure to cell phone radiation.

Cell phone radiation “shield”
Some products claim to shield users from cell phone radiation. According to the FTC, this claim is not scientifically proven to be true of the majority of products. Additionally, the FTC notes that covering a phone’s earpiece is insufficient as radiation emits from the entire cell phone. The report also explains that a shield may interfere with a phone’s signal, causing it to draw more power, and possibly emit more radiation.

The Bodywell Answer
Scientists consider the Bodywell Chip an entirely new approach to cell phone radiation reduction. The Bodywell Chip does not block or redirect radiation. Instead, it triggers a new set of fields that counter the radiation emitted by your cellphone. This approach does not interfere with your cellphone’s signal and does not rely on a specific spot on your phone to be effective.

Calling cellphone use “safe” will earn a quick correction from many doctors. Medical and technology experts are quick to acknowledge at least a possible relationship between brain-tumors and cellphone radiation.

So why do so many studies still seem to dance around the issue? Even the 2010 Interphone study—involving 10 years, 13 countries, $25 million and thousands of tumor patients—failed to take a stand. Widely anticipated as the definitive word on cellphone radiation risks, in the end it provided page after page of unclear discoveries, proof and counter-proof, and the overall sense that nothing definitive was discovered.

Are the wrong questions being asked or are the wrong people asking them?

According to an article in Seattle Magazine, Dr. Henry Lai learned the answer in 1995 while researching the effects of non-ionizing microwave radiation—the same type of radiation emitted by cell phones—on the DNA of rats. He and a fellow researcher, Narendra “N.P.” Singh, found that the DNA in the brain cells of the rats was damaged or broken by exposure to the “safe” level of radiation according to government safety standards. Though their research was not immediately related to cellphones, manufacturers took precautions to keep it from gaining traction.

Are the wrong questions being asked or are the wrong people asking them?

After Drs. Lai and Singh published their findings, a memo was leaked from communications-giant Motorola discrediting Lai. “This shocked me,” Lai says, “as a scientist doing research, I was not expecting to be involved in a political situation.”

What does this mean for the average person holding a cellphone? The interests of manufacturers has led to a cycle that is frustrating doctors and health advocates everywhere: Well-researched science shows reason for major concern but well-funded industry reports are the ones pushed to the news and used as the basis for regulation.

In Italy, the Supreme Court used this imbalance as the basis for its recent ruling that blamed cellphones for Businessman Innocente Marcolini’s brain tumor.

It’s an issue that greatly concerns Dr. Lai. “People always start with the statement ‘Hundreds of studies have been done on this topic, and no effect has been found,’” he says. “But this is a very misleading statement. [The statements] come out from the cell phone industry, and people just use it, like the American Cancer Society. People haven’t even gone in to look at the real studies and look at the effects that people have reported. This really worries me, because people come out and say things without the facts.”

It’s common to see a small child playing with a smartphone or tablet. Considering the alarming studies on possible dangers from cellphones, do children face a bigger risk than adults in an environment saturated with wireless signals?

The basis of the health risk posed by cellphones is twofold. One is the disruption of our bodies’ natural electromagnetic field which is essential to our health. The other is the effects of even low-level radiation on water, which compose a minimum of 55% the body.

The second should be of grave concern to parents. Why? Simply put, children have more water in their bodies. Your baby’s body starts out at around 74% water, he matures and that percentage drops down to around 60%. Children are at much higher risk simply due to them having more water in their bodies.

There are two additional factors which suggest that children face an increased danger from cellphone radiation; relative to adults a child’s skull has a much smaller circumference and, is much thinner. The smaller circumference is an issue because it means more of the child’s head will be bombarded by this radiation. The thinness of their skulls means more of the radiation will get through.

What is clear is that our children are much more likely to be affected if the recent studies about possible dangers from cellphone radiation are accurate.

Parents looking to reduce their children’s exposure to radiation have some options. To start with limit your children’s use of cellphones as much as possible and if you have older kids with cellphones of their own, encourage them to use headphones when speaking. The next step is to get some Bodywell™ chips, and stick them on your family’s phones.

The Bodywell™ chip was engineered by a team of international scientists to counteract the radiation emitted by wireless devices. Easy to use and based on real science, it’s the best way to reduce your family’s exposure to cellphone radiation.

Apple, Motorola, Samsung, and RIM: combined estimated net worth of $530 billion.

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile: combined estimated net worth of $321 billion.

That’s close to a trillion dollars’ worth of companies that do not want you to stop using your cell phone, or even to be worried about your cell phone. Compare that to the combined budgets of the FCC and the EPA, the government agencies responsible for protecting consumers from possible health risks, estimated this year to be $9.3 Billion.

It would be fair to expect that this imbalance might make it hard to regulate mobile companies, and it is. Despite all this, the health agencies did win one small concession. Open any cell phone user manual be it the Samsung Galaxy S III, Blackberry Bold or the iPhone 5 and you’ll find an explicit health warning (albeit buried somewhere in the back) regarding radiation exposure. A distance they recommend should be between you and your phone. It varies from company to company, for example Blackberry says nearly an inch and Apple says 5/8 of an inch.

These recommended distances do not address the fact that most cell phone users hold their phones directly against their head when speaking. Furthermore it is based on science and regulations from 1996. Considering how powerful this industry is, we should see this acknowledgement of potential health risks as the tip of the iceberg.

Big business has a track record of prioritizing profit over their consumer’s health and wellbeing. The Tobacco industry spent $13.8 billion on advertising this past year, trying to promote a product that has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be dangerous, and that’s just one example.

The cell phone industry has as much to lose now as the Tobacco industry did when the studies first started piling up, proving the dangers of cigarettes. Just like the tobacco industry in the 60’s and 70’s, cellphone companies are now fighting to bury the recent spate of reports that are trying to raise the alarm, even working to discredit the research once funded by the cellphone industry after it showed data suggesting that cellphones may cause biological harm.

The health risks posed by constant exposure to mobile devices are far from understood. It is clear though that these concerns, studies and reports can no longer be considered some zany conspiracy theory. The biggest proof? Just check your owner’s manual.
